Get a Personalized Education from WVL!

The open enrollment window is quickly approaching and we are so excited for your family to join our family at WVL.  We know you care deeply about the quality of your child's education, so we want to inform you of the benefits of the personalized education plan that we offer each of our students.  After open enrollment, we will meet with your family during the registration process to ensure that the curriculum and every course selected is appropriate and engaging for your child.  Depending on your child's grade level, we also provide different pathway opportunities: independent, virtual, and blended.  The different pathway options offer a wide range of teacher support, based on the specific needs of your child.  We understand the importance of making school engaging, challenging, and fulfilling!
Our student-centered approach will surround your family with everything you need to ensure the success of your child in our school.  Each family will have their own Student Learning Advocate (SLA).  The SLA will be your primary school contact and will help monitor your child's progress as well as support you if you have any questions or concerns.  New families have told us that their SLA was their lifeline during the first year as they learned the ins and outs of virtual education.  The diagram below illustrates the extensive support you and your child will have available to you, to guarantee a successful learning experience with Wisconsin Virtual Learning:

Exciting News from Dr. William Harbron!

I am writing to share great news about WVL.  The Northern Ozaukee School Board and I have a few exciting announcements in regard to the future of Wisconsin Virtual Learning, and the exceptional education we provide each of our students.

ê   At the January Board meeting, the Board approved a proposal for the administration, in collaboration with the National Network of Digital Schools (NNDS), to pursue a charter school grant to develop and implement the Wisconsin Virtual Learning STEM Academy in 2011-12. If the charter school grant is received, this will be a new learning opportunity provided by WVL for high school-age students who wish to design a personalized learning program with an emphasis in science, technology, engineering, and math.  This ground-breaking initiative will offer our students an opportunity for a world-class STEM education.

ê   In February, WVL is looking forward to a very successful admissions program, designed to welcome students across the state to our school and its many opportunities for our students.

ê   At the regular March meeting, the Board will further demonstrate its commitment to our virtual school by approving a new five-year charter to Wisconsin Virtual Learning.  This means a strong commitment by the board, the administration, faculty, and staff to the future of WVL.  We will continue to work to make WVL the finest virtual school in the country.

Wisconsin Virtual Learning is on course for a bright and long future.  We sincerely hope your family will join us as we continue to provide tomorrow's education today!  For more information on how to enroll, please visit http://www.wisconsinvl.net/.
Sincerely,

Reflections of Success

Let's start off the new year by celebrating student success! What has your child learned? What were their favorite lessons? Why is Wisconsin Virtual Learning the right fit for your family?  Please take a minute to help share your child's success!

Claire is in Little Lincoln 4K, and her mom writes, "some of Claire's first semester successes were learning all the alphabet letters by sight and also the sounds the letters make, all of the numbers 0-9 by sight, sequencing stories and categorizing multiple items, and last but not least (because she is most excited about this) she learned 9 new sight words i.e. a, I, go, the, my, at, in, me, no. I tear up when I think about all she has learned since the school year started. It truly has been a wonderful school year so far."

Cheryl writes, "We have been doing virtual school with WVL for eight years.  We are really enjoying the elluminates this year. They are well thought out and thought provoking for all ages. Heather remembers specific details from her elluminates that have helped her in current lessons. Also many times she recalls things from prior years' elluminates that aid her in this year studies. Best, I think, is being able to choose classes we think are most beneficial for each of our children. I have a rapport with Nancy and Lori to tell me if they think I should sign up Heather or Emily for a class and I will make sure we attend that particular class. I like that there is no pressure to attend a certain number of classes for the year."

When we were contemplating sending Hannah to school we were concerned with her shyness, obedient nature and fear of asking for help.  We were certain that she would be totally overlooked in a classroom, she wouldn't attract attention, she wouldn't ask for help and we were afraid she wouldn't learn as much as she could.  We went with the option of homeschooling and explained our situation to Mrs.Peerenboom.  In the beginning, Hannah wouldn't even speak on the phone.  But Mrs. Peerenboom's patience and persistence won out and soon Hannah was engaging in conversation and even reading aloud.  Now she is in 4th grade and she is often the first one to get on conference with Mrs. Peerenboom and has even been able to read books out loud to the children at story time at the library here in town.  WVL has been a great option for us and has allowed my child to develop her own sense of confidence and learning in a secure environment and we are hopeful that when she does transition to public school she will be ready.  --The Waagen Family
Virtual schooling works for us because it allows our son to work at his own pace: accelerated in math and very interested in science and history.  As a parent it has been thrilling to be able to learn alongside him and feed those interests.  He also has developed a love for reading that I never thought would be possible.  The teachers at WVL are so wonderful in providing support and feedback, to know that we are not alone.  Virtual schooling is the best and only option for our family. --The Thomas Family
WVL is a school with a strong curriculum and a wonderful staff. I did not know that I would love every minute of coaching my two daughters. I have received all the accommodations that I needed to offer the best to my daughters. WVL is truly a wonderful school.  --The Chudnow Family

Financial Aid Information Event

On Wednesday, January 12, the Northern Ozaukee School District Counseling Department will be hosting a Financial Aid Information Night for parents of college bound and tech school bound seniors.  Topics slated to be covered during the presentation include the Financial Aid Process, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Form and its worksheet, and the different types of aid available.  All seniors and/or parents of seniors who are looking to pay for college in the fall of 2011, are strongly encouraged to attend this informational event.  Colleges and universities will not formally provide financial aid packages to students until they have received the financial report that results from filling out the FAFSA.

The presentation will begin at 7:00 p.m. and will be held in the Ozaukee High School/Ozaukee Middle School Library as well as in Mrs. Goodman's Elluminate Room.  Click here to access.  Students and/or parents can choose to attend either the live presentation or the Elluminate session.  In addition, a recording of the presentation will be available for students and/or parents that are not able to attend.

The on-line FAFSA form can be submitted as of January 1, 2011.  Prior to making application, students will need to apply for and receive a pin number.  That number can be obtained at www.pin.ed.gov at any time.  Please note:  the Federal Application (FAFSA) website is www.fafsa.ed.gov not www.fafsa.com.  The government site is free, the commercial site is not.  You do not have to pay to have your form processed!
